About Hopkins, Minnesota

Hopkins is a city rich in historic charm, with roots that go back almost a 150 years. It is has a small land mass at just four square miles, but it packs a lot of charm into its diminutive size. Almost the entire area is developed, and is home to 18,000 people. The city is located amongst other suburban municipalities such as Edina, Minnetonka, and St. Louis Park. Here are some things to know about Hopkins.

Settlers started arriving on the land now known as Hopkins in 1852. They were based out of Fort Snelling, which was sending people out to settle the land.

While people had been living there, the town was really born in 1887, when the Minnesota Threshing Machine Company was founded. This company employed almost all of the residents of Hopkins, and the West Minneapolis Land Company was created the same year to build places for all of those workers to live. By 1892, the Village of West Minneapolis was incorporated out of Hennepin County. By 1928, the village changed its name to Hopkins, after the first postmaster of the village. In 1947, the village became a city under a new charter.

Hopkins boasts a robust arts community, and in celebration of this, opened the Hopkins Center for the arts in 1997. The Center serves as a community hub for arts programming for citizens of all ages, and is considered a cornerstone of the arts community for the region. There is an art gallery, a theater, a dance studio, performance space, and several other multi-purpose spaces.

Another hub for the community is the Hopkins Activity Center. It is been around since 1981, and is located where South Junior High School used to be. It features a gym, a kitchen, and meeting rooms. It houses the Hopkins Historical Society.

Hopkins hosts several festivals throughout the year to foster community togetherness and economic development. The Raspberry Festival is a huge, volunteer-run event that celebrates everything the city has to offer. Summerfest takes place at Downtown Park and has something for everyone, from outdoor movies to fitness classes.
