About Minnetonka, Minnesota

Minnetonka, Minnesota is located in Hennepin County, Minnesota. It’s considered a suburb of Minneapolis and St. Paul. It’s name is derived from the Dakota Indian dialect, and means “great water”. This is perhaps because it’s located near Lake Minnetonka, which ranks among the largest in Minnesota. The water from the lake flows into Minnetonka Creek, which in turn feeds the Mississippi River. The city is home to almost 50,000 people according to the 2010 census.

There are several large employers in Minnetonka, not the least of which is Cargill, which is the largest privately owned company in the United States. United Health Group, which employs the most people in the state, is also Minnesota’s biggest publicly owned company. Other big employers include the healthcare field and education.

Minnetonka used to be just forest and farmland, but has evolved into a bustling area of industrialization and residences. European settlers arrived in the area in 1822 from Fort Snelling and it became a territory of the United States in 1851, with 47 households, mostly consisting of farms. It’s area grew smaller over the next 100 years as other communities were established and encroached on the space, but it’s population kept growing. By 1969 an official charter was drafted and signed, and the city of Minnetonka was born.

There are six public elementary schools, two high schools, and three private schools in Minnetonka. The Hennepin County Library is also located in Minnetonka, inside the Ridgeway LIbrary.

Minnetonka has a mayor and a city council of six members. Two of those members are at-large, while the other 4 represent the different wards of the city. They set the policy, and appoint a city manager. The manager’s job is to execute those policies and to advise the council, as well as managing the day-to-day operations of the city. Minnetonka is part of Minnesota’s 3rd congressional district and is represented by a Republican, Erik Paulsen.
