10 Steps to Take After Moving Into a Home That Needs Painting

By May 26, 2026 No Comments

Moving into a new home is exciting – but if the walls are scuffed, outdated, or just not your style, it can be hard to feel fully settled. The best time to tackle painting is right after you move in, before all your furniture is placed and boxes are unpacked. You have open rooms, easy wall access, and a blank slate to work with. Here are ten steps to take after moving into a home that needs painting.

1. Remove Old Fixtures and Wall Plates

Before you start cleaning or prepping anything, take a walk through the home and remove anything attached to the walls that is outdated or in the way. This includes old doorbell covers, smoke detector boxes, outlet covers, and light switch plates. Removing these items now gives you a clean, unobstructed surface to work with and prevents you from having to tape around them or accidentally paint over them. Keep the screws taped to the backs of the plates so you do not lose them before reinstalling.

2. Clean All Surfaces Thoroughly

Paint doesn’t stick well to dirty surfaces – and walls collect more dust, grease, and grime than most people realize, especially in a home that has been lived in before. Wipe down all walls and trim with a damp cloth and mild soap solution. Pay extra attention to kitchens and bathrooms where grease and moisture build up, and to areas near light switches and baseboards where hands frequently touch. Let the walls dry completely before moving on to the next step. Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons paint peels prematurely.

3. Inspect for Damage and Make a Repair List

Now that the walls are clean, you can see them clearly. Walk through every room and look for nail holes, dents, cracks, peeling paint, and any damaged areas. Make a list as you go so nothing gets missed. Pay attention to corners, trim, and areas around windows and doors where damage is most common. Identifying everything upfront means you will not have to stop mid-project to deal with a repair you missed – and it ensures your finished paint job looks smooth and professional rather than patchy.

4. Fill Holes, Cracks, and Dents

Once you know what needs to be repaired, it is time to patch everything up. Use a lightweight spackle for small nail holes and shallow dents, and a joint compound or drywall patch kit for larger damage. Apply the filler with a putty knife, pressing it into the hole and smoothing it flush with the wall surface. For deeper repairs, apply the filler in thin layers and let each one dry before adding the next. Do not try to rush this step – repairs that are not fully dry before sanding will not hold properly.

5. Sand All Repaired Areas Smooth

Once your repairs are fully dry, sand them smooth with fine-grit sandpaper – usually between 180 and 220 grit. The goal is to make the patched areas blend in seamlessly with the surrounding wall so they do not show through the new paint. Use a sanding block to keep edges even and feather the edges of the patched spots so there is no visible line. After sanding, wipe everything down with a damp cloth to remove the dust. Leftover sanding dust will interfere with paint adhesion if you skip this step.

6. Scrape Away Any Loose or Peeling Paint

If there are areas where the existing paint is bubbling, cracking, or peeling, you need to remove it before applying anything new. Painting over loose paint just traps the problem and leads to the same peeling happening again in a short time. Use a paint scraper or putty knife to remove all the loose material, then sand the edges smooth so there is a clean transition between the existing paint and the bare surface. These areas will likely need primer before your topcoat, which is covered in a later step.

7. Apply Painter’s Tape

Before you prime or paint anything, tape off the areas you want to protect. Apply painter’s tape along baseboards, window and door trim, ceiling edges, and any hardware that cannot be removed. Press the tape down firmly along the edges to prevent paint from bleeding underneath – a loose edge is what causes that messy, uneven line. Taking your time with this step makes a big difference in how clean and sharp your finished lines look. Remove the tape while the paint is still slightly wet for the cleanest edge.

8. Prime Where Needed

Primer is not always required for every surface, but it is essential in certain situations. Any area where you made repairs, scraped down to bare drywall, or removed peeling paint needs to be primed. You should also prime if you are making a dramatic color change, especially going from a dark color to a lighter one, or if there are stains from water, smoke, or other sources. Primer seals the surface, blocks stains, and gives your topcoat a uniform base to grip. Skipping primer in these situations often means uneven color and paint that wears down faster.

9. Paint From the Top Down

When it is time to paint, work in the right order: ceilings first, then walls, then trim and baseboards. Starting at the top means any drips or accidental marks on the lower surfaces will be covered as you work your way down. Use a brush to cut in along edges and corners before rolling the larger areas. Apply the paint in thin, even coats and allow each coat to dry fully before adding the next. Two coats are almost always better than one heavy coat, which can drip, look uneven, and take much longer to dry.

10. Do a Final Inspection and Touch Up

Once everything is painted and dry, do a thorough walkthrough of every room in good lighting. Look for thin spots, missed areas, or places where the paint did not cover evenly. Touch up anything that needs it with a small brush. Remove all painter’s tape, drop cloths, and protective coverings, and reinstall outlet covers, switch plates, and any fixtures you removed at the start. Step back and take in the finished result – a clean, fresh coat of paint makes a new house feel like your home.
